Relive the moments
Singer-songwriter Dermot Kennedy shares his pre-show rituals in the Big Apple.
Cars in traffic line the streets of New York City. Smiling fans begin to line up outside of a concert venue. Three friends smile for a photo together inside the hallway. Finally, the main act, singer-songwriter Dermot Kennedy is shown singing a line out to the crowd passionately.
Chase and Pitchfork hit the road to interview some of your favorite musicians 20 minutes before they took the stage.

20 Minutes Until... Chase Sound Check. Featuring... Dermot Kennedy.
Upbeat music plays
Singer-songwriter Dermot Kennedy is walking down the street in New York City as yellow cabs pass by.
What's up, Dermot? Here we are in New York City. What's your favorites thing to do before a show?
Cut to Dermot walking down the street in New York City. He’s wearing cool yellow sweatpants and a denim top under a puffy black jacket.
Go for a run in Central Park. If I can get that done, then I know it's gonna be a good day.
When you're on tour, what's one thing that you do to stay energized?
Cut to Dermot inside the concert venue. He’s stretching out his legs and warming up his vocals for the performance.
Something I've been doing is yoga, and I'm an absolute beginner and pretty crap at it, but it definitely is an important part of my day now, and it's good 'cause it just means I focus on something other than music for, like, 90 minutes, so it counts for a lot, yeah.
Can you give us a yoga move?
No! Imagine downward dog in New York.
♪ All these memories run my mind in slow motion ♪♪
Cut to Dermot walking into his green room. There’s a big brick wall and a black couch. Dermot sits down next to some friends. He picks up his guitar to show it off.
All right, so we just arrived in the green room. Any pre-show jitters for you?
Uh, no, I'm good. I mean, I get to play songs for people which is my favorite thing to do.
Is that your guitar for the performance?
Yes, indeed. Only 18 years old.
You want to play us a little jam?
I don't know.
Cut to Dermot standing up. He puts his guitar down and walks toward the hall.
(soft guitar music)
What advice would you give to your 18-year-old self?
Uh, be patient. in everything that you do. And stay true to what it is you want to be because it will come good eventually and there is no sort of right time for it to happen. It will just happen whenever it does.
♪ Do you remember when? ♪ ♪ With Rome below us that day ♪♪
What's the most crucial part of your pre-show ritual?
Uh, warming up and whiskey.
Last thing you think before you step onstage?
Dermot makes his way toward the stage hallway, ready to walk out for his performance. The hallway lights shine bright in his direction.
Um, I think I just check myself and try and make sure I'm about to be as present as possible in the show
and just only live within that night and not worry about anything past that.
One emotion you want people to feel at your shows.
I think the most powerful thing I want people to feel at my shows is nostalgia. I think everything I sing about is often about how important it is to live well, and so I just want people to think back on their most cherished memories and sort of live in those moments as vividly as they can.
All right, Dermot, thanks for hanging with us. Have fun out there.
Dermot walks onstage and performs. The crowd goes wild!
